What is Gynecomastia?
Physicians believe gynecomastia is caused by hormonal problems. Although it can sometimes be linked to a man’s lifestyle, the cause is not always clear. With gynecomastia, the male breasts can be painful or sensitive. If you believe gynecomastia is the cause of your excess breast tissue, you should see a physician and try to resolve the issue before considering cosmetic surgery.Who can benefit from Male Breast Reduction?
If you are a candidate for this surgery, you should meet these conditions:- Bothered by a condition of excess breast tissue on your chest
- At a stable and healthy body weight
- A non-smoker or cease smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery
- Have good skin elasticity on the chest
The Procedure: How Male Breast Reduction Works
Dr. Rosen may recommend a medical evaluation before your surgery, possibly with an MRI or mammogram to analyze the composition of your breast tissue. Breast reduction surgery on a man requires about 1 hour of operating time. Local anesthesia is used for minor procedures while general anesthesia may be necessary for significant removal of tissue.
Your procedure will involve a removal of glandular tissue and/or fat. Dr. Rosen may use liposuction or surgical tissue removal. Incisions are made around the nipple or near the underarm. Fat is dislodged and liposuction vacuums the fat from the chest area.
After Your Male Breast Reduction: Recovery and Results
Recovery time is about 1 week, but you will need to postpone exercise for about 3 weeks. After surgery, your chest will be wrapped in gauze. Bruising, swelling and some discomfort should be expected during this time. As swelling subsides, you’ll be able to appreciate the results of male breast reduction. A flatter, more masculine chest will be seen, which can maintained or even further improved through regular exercise and a healthy diet.Possible Complications of Male Breast Reduction
All cosmetic surgery carries a risk of complications. For male breast reduction, adverse events include but are not limited to: noticeable scarring, pigment changes, asymmetry, infection, skin injury, bleeding, fluid loss or buildup, reaction to anesthesia. If you have special concerns, ask Dr. Rosen for more information about surgery risks.
