Can You Benefit from Rhinoplasty?
A person who chooses rhinoplasty surgery often has self-image problems closely related to the appearance of his or her nose. She may believe it is out of proportion, abnormally large, or misshaped.
A wide variety of aesthetic changes can be made to the nose with rhinoplasty. If your nose appears too long, large, crooked, wide, narrow, or bumpy, rhinoplasty may be an appropriate solution.
How Rhinoplasty Enhances Nasal Proportion
First you will meet with Dr. Rosen to discuss your aesthetic ideals as they relate to your nose. Together you may study photos and analyze angles of the nose to determine the intended result.
The typical operation will require 1 to 3 hours under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. Dr. Rosen may choose to perform your rhinoplasty as a closed or open operation. During closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nose. With open rhinoplasty, the skin of your nose is lifted to allow a clear view of all nasal structures.
Bone and cartilage is reshaped according to your specific aesthetic goals. This may involve reducing, augmenting or refining the shape of your nose. Some cases may require a tissue graft or even fracture of the bone. Absorbable sutures will be placed after the nose is reshaped, along with nasal packing and a special splint.
After Rhinoplasty: What to Expect During Your Recovery
Recovery will vary for each patient. Most are able to return to their normal routine in 1 to 2 weeks. Pain medications will help you manage discomfort during the first week. After the first week, the nasal packing (if used) will be removed. It takes time for the swelling from rhinoplasty to subside, so the results may not be realized immediately. For some it may take as long as 6 months.
Adjusting to your new nose is not always easy, and older patients may find it especially difficult. For at least 6 weeks, you will need to avoid activities that may potentially damage the nose. Contact sports are not recommended!
Possible Rhinoplasty Complications
Cosmetic surgery procedures all carry a risk of complications. With rhinoplasty, possible adverse events include but are not limited to nasal obstruction, unsatisfactory results, bleeding and sinus infection.Rhinoplasty Alternatives
If rhinoplasty is not an ideal solution for you, Dr. Rosen may recommend an alternative procedure. To improve breathing in the nose, a procedure called septoplasty may be recommended. For non-surgical nasal contouring, a dermal filler injection may be the right choice. If your facial features are unbalanced and your nose appears prominent, a chin implant may bring your facial features into proportion.
