Restylane and Perlane are dermal fillers composed of hyaluronic acid gel. They are commonly used for reducing wrinkles around the nose and mouth. Restylane Philadelphia has been called “the most popular wrinkle filler in North America,” and is available in more than 70 other countries.
Composed of cross-linked hyaluronic acid, Restylane restores an important structural component in the skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and contour irregularities. Perlane is a very similar product that contains larger gel particles for treating deeper wrinkles.
What Can We Treat With Restylane?
Restylane is FDA approved for moderate to severe wrinkles or facial creases. The nasolabial folds (NLFs) are the most common area of correction; these lines travel from each side of the nose to the corners of your mouth.
Off label use is common with Restylane. Physicians have used it for lip augmentation, correction of lip wrinkles, marionette lines, hollow tear trough deformity and facial contouring of the chin, cheeks and temples.
Your Restylane Procedure – How it Works
First, the skin is cleansed with antiseptic. The areas targeted for correction are carefully chosen. Using a special technique, Dr. Rosen injects Restylane beneath the skin at a specified depth. The product binds with water and combines with your body’s natural hyaluronic acid, acting as a cushioning agent and space filler. To control discomfort during this process, Dr. Rosen may provide a nerve block or numbing cream. What to Expect When Your Restylane Treatment is Finished
Immediately after injection, the doctor may briefly massage the area to ensure perfect placement. The face should exhibit a smoother appearance, though it may seem overly full initially. Minor swelling and bruising are common but should subside quickly. You should abstain from exercise, sun exposure or alcohol for the first 24 hours. Your results from Restylane can last as long as 6 – 12 months. After about 4 months, your body’s metabolism begins to break down the filler, eventually clearing it away. Touch-up injections can help to maintain an optimal correction and less material is usually needed during these subsequent visits. Are there Restylane side effects I should know about?
Most side effects reported with Restylane and mild or moderate in nature and last fewer than 7 days. The most common side effects include redness, pain, tenderness, firmness, swelling, bumps, bruising, itching and discoloration. As with any injection into the skin, there is a risk of infection.
