Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentation is performed for two basic reasons: to enhance the shape of a person’s lips, and/or to increase their size. There are several methods a surgeon can utilize to achieve these goals, and each will create the appearance of fuller-looking lips. A lip implant is typically placed, which is made with collagen, hyaluronic acid, fat, or other substances, while augmentation of the lips can be focused on reshaping, adding volume, or simply rejuvenating the area to reduce the appearance of lip wrinkles.

Is Lip Augmentation Right for Me?

Although these cosmetic improvements can be very satisfying for patients, it is important for you to maintain realistic expectations. If you are prone to cold sores, tell the doctor during your consultation. If you have a dental abscess or skin eruption, you may be advised to postpone or forego lip augmentation.

If you are dissatisfied with lips that are thin or flat, lip augmentation may be right for you. Several related conditions can also be corrected, including these:

  • Drooping lips
  • Lip wrinkles/Smoker’s lines
  • Loss of fullness in the lips
  • Laugh lines
  • Lipstick lines
  • Skin laxity

What’s the Lip Augmentation Procedure Like?

Most procedures use some type of wrinkle filler to enhance the lips and surrounding areas. Fat, collagen or hyaluronic acid fillers are frequently used, with Restylane and Juvederm being common choices for many cosmetic surgeons.

Using a dental block to manage pain, the filler is injected along the natural tract of the vermillion border of the upper lip. The Cupid’s bow is molded according to the patient’s desires. The lower lips and corners of the mouth are treated next.

Doctor Rosen takes extra care to ensure a natural appearance is maintained in your lips so that injections may be conservative during your first visit. The filler is massaged to ensure proper contour and avoid bumps.

Your Lip Augmentation Recovery Period

For the most part, your recovery after lip augmentation will be quite mild. Some mild discomfort and swelling can occur after your lip augmentation procedure, lasting only a few hours. Some residual bruising may last about one week, after which you’ll be able to fully enjoy your incredible new results!

You can expect to be numb around your mouth (like you would after visiting the dentist) for about two hours after lip augmentation, but this will fade.

You may also be advised to limit the movement of the mouth during this time. Dr. Rosen will let you know exactly what to expect after your lip augmentation procedure.

Your Lip Augmentation Results

Most results last for about three to six months, but this will vary depending on the material used. Dermal fillers are typically absorbed and metabolized faster in the lips because of frequent movement.
